Port Kembla take out Encourage Shield for 2016
Kiama Golf Club played host to the final of the 2016 Encourage Shield final on Sunday August 28. Moss Vale, who were trying to make it back to back titles took on Port Kembla.
Both teams finished the preliminary matches with one loss each. Moss Vale prevailed in their previous match with a 4-2 victory of Port at Moss Vale. With the final being played at a neutral course it promised to be a close match.
Moss Vale's Daisy Schaefer earned her team the first point of the final with a 7/6 over Port Kembla's number six Declan Ward. The match was even after Port Kembla's number two Eddie Ward defeated Ethan De Leeuw 7/6. The number five match saw Port hit the lead when Corey Nolan won his match against Cooper Nianios 2uo. Port Kembla made it three matches to one when Issac Brown (number four) was victorious over Brad Johnson 2/1.
Port Kembla,with three matches in and the number one and four matches both dormie were in the box seat to take the title. There was still a chance if Moss Vale could win both. With one match on the 17th and the other on the 18th the result was finally sealed when number one Jake Popovski prevailed over Hamish Schaefer 3/1. The other match saw Moss Vale's Jacob Gleeson win the eighteenth hole to square his match with Selena Bosevski. Normally the match would be played out however as Port Kembla had recorded four wins the match was declared as a square and the final result was Port Kembla 4.5 - Moss Vale 1.5.
The win means Port Kembla will now play off against the Far South Coast DGA winner Bega in late October.
