Illawarra retain team title at Country Championships
The Country Championships were held at Goulburn Golf Club on the weekend. After a successful 2016 which saw Golf Illawarra claim the team event and Anthony Brunero individual honours, the team was primed for another strong showing. Brunero was unavailable this year there so it was other team members who would step up in search of the win.
At the conclusion of Saturday's first round Danny Nesbitt was in a six way tie for the lead after a one under 69, with Mark Panopoulos (70) and Colin Mitchell (72) next best. The team format which saw the best four scores count towards the team total and it was Golf Illawarra (284) who would lead into day two by three from ACT-Monaro (287), closely followed by Mid North Coast (288), Murray DGA (289) and Newcastle (290) .
The start of play on day two saw much more favourable conditions with the greens remaining impeccable and praised by all who played. Nesbitt and Panopolous maintained their positions on the leaderboard at 1 under and even par with Mitchell getting to 5 under for his round midway through the day and briefly leading. Unfortunately all three players relinquished their positions by the close of play. In the end Panopoulos finished runner-up, Mitchell tied 3rd and Nesbitt tied 6th had to settle for top 3. The team continued to build on the hard work done on day one which ensured Illawarra won the team competition by nine strokes.
